Advanced Health Occupations

•Advanced Health Occupation students visited the University of Michigan Medical Center learning about ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). They were doing research for their upcoming HOSA competition. They will be competing in the Health Education event. ECMO is essentially a cardiac, lung bypass machine that patients are placed on when there is virtually no hope of survival.

•On November 11th the Advance Health Occupations class was able to witness a live total knee replacement through a videoconference. This was powerful learning experience as this experience allows for them to ask questions and interact via videoconference with surgeons and medical personnel in a real hospital operating room.

• Beginning March 18th our Marketing & Entrepreneurship and Computer Networking programs are having businessmen from Village Printing go into their programs to teach the Junior Achievement Entrepreneurship Program. They will be visiting the programs every Thursday for the next seven weeks. The curriculum is very interactive and begins with ideas and new product generation and will continue until each section of a business plan is covered.

Culinary Arts

• On December 9th we prepared a 4-course meal for 100, served and cleared. This Christmas Buffet allowed the students to learn the industry in “real-time” experience. Upon arriving, the students went straight to work. The customers were already seated and waiting for service, even before the students arrived. They work hosting, buffet service, table service, bake sale, food runner and rounds person. Every student had one specific job that was required, under the scrutiny of the community. At the end of the day, they were both proud, and tired.

• Ten teams went down to Macomb for the Gingerbread competition and they received two gold medals, five silver and three bronze. It was a very stiff competition this year with Romeo and Anchor Bay competing against them. Also, a silent auction was held for the Gingerbread Houses at English Gardens on Hall Road located next to Partridge Creek Mall. All proceeds went to benefit Forgotten Harvest Food Bank. The competition on December 3rd in Caro, went to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister foundation. Competition results will be posted. Also, a past student, Brandon D’Arca came in for a fruit carving demonstration. Brandon has worked with Food Networks own Ray Dewey, and really did a great job. Fruit carving, because it is meticulous, is not for everyone, but some of the students really showed interest and are practicing at home. Two Ed-Tech culinary graduates are scheduled to appear in Michigan Restaurant Magazine in the next couple of months.
